Origin and Meaning of the Word “Rune”

The word Rune means “that which is whispered” or “that which is secret.” It derives from the root ru, referring to murmuring, secrecy, and concealed transmission of knowledge. This etymology reflects a fundamental truth: runic knowledge was never meant to be public.

It was transmitted orally, from master to apprentice, from priest to initiate, within a sacred framework, far from profane writing and popular dissemination. Runes belonged to the realm of initiation, not to ordinary learning.

Ritual Use and Sacred Practice

Runes were primarily used during mystical ceremonies, by druids, shamans, and initiated priests. They were not simple drawn symbols, but living carriers of vibration.

Wood was always chosen with care, as trees held deep sacred significance: they symbolized the connection between worlds, spiritual verticality, and living memory.

The symbols were carved using a metal tool, then activated through the blood of the officiant, in order to imprint the rune with personal energetic vibration. At the end of the ritual, the wood was often burned, ensuring that the knowledge would not be profaned and would remain within the subtle realms.

Antiquity and Partial Loss of Knowledge

The earliest reliable archaeological evidence dates to approximately 200 CE, yet other historical indications suggest a much earlier use, reaching at least 1300 BCE.

From the 11th century onward, with the expansion of Christianity, runes were progressively forbidden, destroyed, or labeled heretical. A significant portion of the original knowledge was thus lost.

What remains today is a fragmentary sacred alphabet, carrying powerful symbols, whose original depth far exceeds modern simplified interpretations.

The Futhark and Runic Structure

The runic alphabet is called the Futhark, named after its first six runes. Iceland officially used runes until 1639, when their use was formally prohibited.

There are three major systems:

• the Elder Futhark
• the Germanic Futhark
• the Anglo-Saxon Futhark

In mystical ceremonies, the Elder Futhark was always employed. It contains 24 runes, divided into three families known as Aett, each consisting of eight runes.

The first family is associated with Freyr / Freya, the second with Heimdallr / Hagalaz, and the third with Tyr / Tiwaz. Each Aett represents a cycle of experience, transformation, and evolution.

Symbolism and Natural Forces

Each rune derives its name and essence from an element of nature, a cosmic force, a sacred object, a fundamental concept, or a deity.

Runes do not represent fixed events, but energetic dynamics: movements, transitions, tensions, and potentials.

Odin’s Sacrifice and the Transmission of Runes

According to Norse tradition, Odin, seeking ultimate wisdom, sacrificed himself upon Yggdrasil, the Tree of Life. Pierced by his own spear, Gungnir, he remained suspended for nine days and nine nights.

At the end of this ordeal, he received the knowledge of the runes, carved them into the sacred Tree, and transmitted them to humanity, so that people might understand the invisible laws governing existence.

Divinatory and Initiatory Function

Runes allow one to perceive the path already walked, past actions, lessons integrated or ignored, and present energetic dynamics.

They provide insight into the present by indicating appropriate actions, while also revealing future energies and potential outcomes.

More than a predictive tool, runes constitute a system of self-knowledge, energetic alignment, and spiritual evolution.

Protection, Amulets, and Energetic Work

Runes were also used as protective symbols. They were engraved on objects, weapons, jewelry, or even directly on the body.

When activated with clear intention, they transmit their energy, strengthen the energetic field, and support the individual during periods of transformation.

Runes as an Inner Path

Working with runes is an inward journey. They reveal fears, strengths, unconscious patterns, and the challenges required for growth.

They teach how to walk with light without fearing darkness, how to protect one’s energy, and how to understand the deeper meaning of life’s experiences.
