Vedic Astrology, widely known as Jyotish, is one of the major astrological traditions of India. It studies the natal chart through a distinctive system of zodiac signs, houses, planetary factors, lunar mansions and planetary periods.
Particular importance is given to the Lagna, the Moon, the Nakshatras, the planetary periods known as Dashas, and the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu.
What is Vedic Astrology?
Vedic Astrology is a traditional astrological system developed within the Indian cultural tradition and refined over centuries into a complex family of techniques and interpretive schools.
The term Jyotish or Jyotisha is traditionally associated with light and refers to a broader Indian field concerned with celestial bodies, time and astral cycles. In modern usage, “Vedic Astrology” is commonly used for astrological traditions belonging to Jyotish.
Natal Chart
The Vedic natal chart organizes signs, houses and Grahas according to the principles of Jyotish.
Planetary Periods
Dashas divide time into successive planetary periods used in traditional interpretation.
Rahu & Ketu
The north and south lunar nodes carry particular symbolic importance in Vedic astrology.
Western and Vedic Astrology
Western Astrology
Modern Western astrology generally uses the tropical zodiac and includes many schools ranging from traditional and horary astrology to psychological, archetypal and evolutionary approaches.
Vedic Astrology
Vedic Astrology generally uses a sidereal zodiac and places particular emphasis on the Lagna, Moon, Nakshatras, Dashas and Rahu and Ketu.
Core Concepts of Jyotish
Lagna
The Vedic Ascendant: the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth.
Moon
The Moon occupies a central role in many Jyotish techniques and is read through sign, house and Nakshatra.
Nakshatras
The traditional lunar mansions dividing the zodiac into smaller sections.
Dashas
Systems of successive planetary periods. Vimshottari Dasha is among the best known.
Rahu & Ketu
The lunar nodes are treated as important astrological indicators with distinctive symbolism.
Bhavas
The houses of the chart, representing different areas of life.
Grahas
The planetary factors of Jyotish: Sun, Moon, visible planets and the lunar nodes.
Rashis
The twelve zodiac signs through which the Grahas are mapped and interpreted.
Nakshatras — The Lunar Mansions
The Nakshatras are one of the most distinctive features of Jyotish. The Moon’s position within a Nakshatra is used in many traditional techniques and is associated with different interpretive qualities.
Depending on the technique, Nakshatras may also be considered in relation to other Grahas, the Lagna and planetary timing systems.
Dashas — The Astrological Dimension of Time
Dashas are systems of successive planetary periods. They introduce a temporal dimension into interpretation rather than limiting the chart to a static image of birth.
Different periods are traditionally associated with different Grahas. The Vimshottari Dasha is among the most widely known systems.
Rahu and Ketu — The Lunar Nodes
Rahu and Ketu correspond to the two nodes at which the Moon’s orbit intersects the plane of the ecliptic.
Within Vedic Astrology they are treated as major astrological factors and participate in natal interpretation, Dasha systems and other techniques.
