What is asteroid Icarus?
1566 Icarus was discovered on 27 June 1949 by astronomer Walter Baade. It belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and its orbit brings it unusually close to the Sun.
Astrologically, Icarus is used as an archetype of liberation, transcendence, courage and risk.
The myth of Icarus — prison, wings and the Sun
Icarus was the son of Daedalus, the great craftsman and inventor. Father and son were trapped on Crete under the authority of King Minos.
Daedalus created wings from feathers and wax and warned Icarus to fly neither too low nor too high.
Intoxicated by flight, Icarus rose higher. The Sun melted the wax and he fell into the sea.
The deeper meaning is not only the fall. Before the fall came the flight. He escaped because he dared to attempt what had seemed impossible.
